The Relationship between Immunocompetence and Antistreptolysin 0 titer in Chronic Tonsillitis.

Abstract
As a component tissue of the Waldeyer¢¥s ring, the palatine tonsil is one of the lympho-epithelial system and embryologically originated from the second pharyngeal pouch near the anlage of the thymus.
Histologically, 80 to 90,¡Æ0 of the cellularities of the tonsils are composed of various develop-mental stages of the lymphoid cells, 60 to 80% of them are marrow-derived cells and remaining 30 to 40% are thymus dependent cells.
On the background of the anatomical location, histological compositions and embryological development, it is easily suspected that the tonsils may have some immunologic functions.
In order to evaluate the relationship between immunocompetence and ASO titer, the author collect 32 cases of chronic tonsillitis and estimated ASO titer, rosette test and plasma level of the various immunoglobulins.
The experimental groups were classified as Group 1 which has ASO titer below 200 Todd unit and Group 2 which has ASO titer above 200 Todd unit. The results were as follows;
1. The plasma IgG level of the experimental group was significantly higher than that of control group. (p<0.01)
2. The plasma IgG level of the Group 2 which has ASO titer above 200 Todd unit was significantly higher than of Group 1 which has ASO titer below 200 Todd unit (p<0.05) 3. The rosette positivities of the experimental groups were significantly lower than of the control group. (p<0.01).
